“We all wear the mask, but how long will it last” is about access to clean water for all (United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 and UN Water Action Decade). The United Nations seeks to ensure safe drinking water and sanitation for all. Houston, as a city built on bayous, is particularly affected by this issue. Over the last two years, more than 2 million Houstonians were under three boil water notices, highlighting the system’s vulnerability and the importance of never taking water access for granted.
It features a Texas black bear sitting in despair, disguised as a unicorn with a mask strapped to his head. Empty-handed, he is questioning us on our future! Like all wildlife, this endangered species' life depends on access to clean water, which he doesn't seem to find around him anymore. The bear is sitting in a hot and dry land, conveyed by the yellow and brown colors of the background, and his posture serves as an imitation of a man. He is at risk of disappearing and becoming a myth like the unicorn. However, the unicorn also has a deeper meaning, acting as a reference to mythology for its power to purify water with its magical horn. The bear yearns to have that power too. The message is that his future, like ours, could become a mythological fantasy if we don't manage our resources better. We should no longer be applying masks to disguise major problems.
